A trio of demonstration projects organized by the Southeast Arkansas Stormwater Education Program reveal cost savings associated with recycling, reductions in weekly littering rates, and diversion of clean recyclable materials from going to the landfill, according to a news release.
The projects were conducted by the Jefferson County Extension Service in partnership with the city of Pine Bluff, city of White Hall, Jefferson County and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, according to the release.
As part of a focus to reduce littering and illegal dumping in Jefferson County through a regional stormwater education program, the partners have managed to document reductions in littering, increases in cost savings and diversions of recyclable material from going to the landfill, according to the release.
The largest cost savings and recycling volume was achieved at the UAPB move-in recycle event at which $2,000 in waste management costs and 45 cubic yards of recyclable materials were generated.
At the Jefferson County Extension Office, five cubic yards of recyclable material were recovered and $15 were produced from a three month recycling start up initiative.
Partners have also been able to document a six gallon per week decrease of window toss littering through a three month road side litter pick up audit and an associated “Think. Don’t Throw” education campaign.
