Award certificates, ribbons, and trophies filled the front of the stage in the auditorium for everyone to see at the recent meeting of the White Hall School Board held at Redfield Junior High School on Tuesday, May 10.
A facility use request submitted by Nancy Oudin on behalf of the White Hall Choir Parents was approved by the board for the use of the White Hall High School dining area on May 9, from 5-9 p.m., for their annual Choir Banquet.
Bunny Brown with Jackson Brown King Architects gave the construction update. “While the floor projects continue to be an issue, claims are still being taken, said Brown. I will tell you that the projects are being inspected view by view, crack by crack.” He added that the landscapers were in the process of re-top soiling and replanting due to the recent storms.
Brown also reported that the HVAC systems for Hardin, Gandy and Moody Elementary Schools were complete and bidding was scheduled to take place at 2 p.m., on May 24.
In other business, Redfield Junior High was in the school spotlight for the month of May and Principal James Kight gave a short film presentation set to the song, “Life is Like a Slideshow” giving the staff, parents and teachers at Moody words of praise, describing them as involved and caring. Kight also pointed out each and every award that filled the stage recognizing each individual winner. Following the presentation, the RJHS choir sang a number of songs. A photo of their performance can be found on Page 9 of this week’s Journal.
Special recognition was also given to Taylor Elementary School for placing first and second in the Spring Arkansas Stock Market Game sponsored by Economics Arkansas (EA). Mary Beth Passmore was also recognized by EA in the Advisory ranking for the ASMG. The White Hall School Track Boys finished first and the girls finished third in the District Track meet.
A stipend of 0.15 for the athletic director position was approved. The vote was 6-0 with one abstention and two not voting. The board also agreed to vote next month on the proposed policy changes by the Arkansas School Board Association.
Larry Smith, superintendent, also reported on the low number of enrollments pointing out that the district is down by 52 students, the lowest point since the 1999-2000 school year. He added that the numbers would still most likely decline because the pending phasing out still taking place at the Pine Bluff Arsenal.
Following executive session, the board approved the hiring of Doug Dorris for WHJH principal; the certified transfer of Kelly Norman from WHJH teacher to RJH Media Specialist; four classified resignations; the classified transfer of Carol Eagle from Hardin Elementary to Moody Elementary School; and the classified new hire of Nancy Ramsey for White Hall High School APEX lab assistant.
