White Hall’s boys and girls basketball teams will play in the Fordyce Tournament, which begins Monday, Nov. 30, and continues through Saturday, Dec. 5.
Coach Mike Upshaw’s Lady Bulldogs, who narrowly missed the playoffs last year, will play Bearden at 3:20 p.m. Monday. Coach Joe Stacey’s Bulldogs, coming off an 8-16 campaign, will meet Fordyce at 8:45 p.m.
The Bulldogs, who won only two 5A-Southeast Conference games a year ago, return several regulars who Stacey hopes will help give White Hall better consistency. Among the returnees are Evan Sidwell, Cortez Warrior, Dion Young and Cameron Stone.
Stacey said his team is “working hard” as it seeks improvement.
The Lady Bulldogs also have some experienced players in camp. Among the top returnees are Danielle Clark, Rebekah Dixon, Emily Grace Ruggeri, Kayla Walters and Mallory Keen.
“I’m proud of these girls for the dedication they’ve shown to doing a more thorough job this year,” said Upshaw. “I expect they’re going to become better shooters and will give a complete effort in every game.”
Yvonne Neal is Upshaw’s aide. Stacey is assisted by long-time WHHS coach Steve Edwards.
Upshaw will coach against his brother, Mark Upshaw, when the Lady Bulldogs host Hot Springs on Friday, Dec. 4. The Upshaw brothers are WHHS products.
The Lady Trojans defeated visiting White Hall 47-31 last week. Walters was White Hall’s top scorer with 8 points. Clark had 7 points and six steals. Lela Watson counted 5 points.
Dixon dominated the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds while scoring 4 points.
“I saw some good things for us,” said Upshaw. “We never quit and we got better as the game went on.”
