In junior high and senior high school Mary excelled both athletically and academically. She was a straight-A student and elected to the Student Council.  She was in the Gifted and Talented program and received multiple awards in English, Science, Math, Physical Education, and History. She was an All-American Stepper and choreographed a dance for the Beta Club Convention, and was yearbook co-editor and Spanish Club vice president. Mary was on the school tennis team and qualified for state all four years of high school. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and did community service work in many areas, including tutoring children. Other honors included Theta Alpha Kappa, the Religious Studies Honor Society and the Beta Beta Beta Biology Society. She loved her years living in Memphis and attending Rhodes, and her close college friends will serve as pallbearers at her funeral.

Mary was accepted into the University of Arkansas School for Medical Sciences School of Pharmacy, but was unable to attend because of cancer treatments.

Her maternal grandmother, Mary Barden Copeland and paternal grandparents, Mary and Jearl Passmore preceded her in death.
