A recent Jefferson County Quorum Court appropriation to the Pine Bluff Weed and Seed program is reaping dividends for county residents outside the city, according to Justice of the Peace Ted Harden of White Hall.
Harden and his quorum court counterparts approved a $14,819 appropriation to the program, which combats crime by helping to create community pride and promote safe neighborhoods. The monies are earmarked to underwrite expenses in computer classes for “adults and seniors” and summer youth activities.
Harden said the computer courses would provide instruction in the following areas:
• WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM – Operations and objects; running application programs; saving and retrieving files; creating folders for file storage.
• ACCESSING – Understanding Web browsers; accessing and navigating Web pages; copying, printing and saving a Web page; research/searching for information on the Internet; creating a Web page from a word document; accessing e-mail; setting up a free e-mail address; e-mail communications.
• USING THE MS WORD WORDPROCESSOR – Creating and editing documents; creating fliers and announcements; using a wizard to create a resume and cover letter; generating form letters and resumes; creating newsletters.
• USING THE MS EXCEL WORKSHEET – Creating and formatting the basic worksheet; adding an embedding chart from worksheet data; printing features; formulas and functions; auto-formatting and special formatting features; practice applications; creating a household budget application.
• USING THE MS ACCESS DATABASE – Creating a database structure; adding information to tables; previewing and printing table contents; creating a form for user-friendly access; creating and printing a report; selecting information from the database.
• USING THE MS POWERPOINT PRESENTATION TOOL – Reviewing the PowerPoint tool and window; creating, viewing, printing and saving PowerPoint slides; adding clip art and animation to slides.
The youth program would provide instruction and/or supervision in the following areas:
• CONFLICT RESOLUTION.
• CRIME AND DRUG PREVENTION.
• ANTI-BULLYING.
• BUDGET AND BANKING.
• BASIC COMPUTER USAGE – Storing and retrieving files; creating documents; downloading information; Internet access; typing/keyboarding; games.
• GRAMMER AND SPELLING.
• WORKING IN A GROUP SETTING.
• HOMEWORK COMPLETION.
• SAFE AND POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTS.
• STRUCTURED ACTIVITIES.
Harden said the courses and youth activities are to be offered at no cost to participants. For more information on class dates and times and other details, telephone 870-536-7274.
“I think this is an excellent opportunity for persons in the White Hall area to receive some professional computer guidance and helpful instruction in other areas,” said Harden. “And I hope that they take advantage of it.”
