Going to college can be the difference in a satisfying career of doing what you want to do and working at a job that merely pays the bills. That’s the message students at WHHS are receiving this week as part of the Say Go College Week.
Throughout the week students, teachers and administrators at WHHS will join more than 300 public and private high schools in a week of unique, fun activities that make college seem less of a mystery and more of a possibility.
Each day of the week is devoted to a particular theme, and WHHS will host several events that help students understand the importance of higher education and how to pursue it.
WHHS students will participate through college lunch visits, signing a college commitment banner, scavenger hunts, college myth-busting programs, crossword puzzles, and a day for sporting favorite collegiate gear.
WHHS has received donations from colleges around the state of t-shirts, pennants, pens, pencils, bags etc to be given out as prizes to students. This year's contributors include: UCA, Harding, University of the Ozarks, Williams Baptist, UCACCB, ASU, UofA, Lyons, SAU, SAU Tech, UAM, the National Guard and Army. There are more than 400 items to be given out in prizes to students participating in Say "Go College" Week activities.
“The quality of life is often dependent upon the ability to make choices,” said ADHE Interim Director Shane Broadway, “and there’s opportunity, knowledge to gain and experiences that you can only find through higher education.
SGCW will culminate on Sunday, Feb. 19 with College Goal Sunday, when more than 30 college, university and high school campuses will open their doors to allow trained staff to assist students and their families with the first critical step in receiving financial assistance for college – filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA). As a reminder, the FAFSA requires the most recent tax information, so families are strongly encouraged to bring copies of their W-2 forms.
The closest College Goal Sunday location will be at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), Herrin Hall beginning at 2 p.m. This is an excellent time for senior parents to get help filling out the FAFSA, as deadlines for submitting this document are just around the corner!
SGCW is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education to raise awareness of the value and importance of post-secondary education.
