The old adage “You get what you pay for” is generally true, but there’s always an exception to any rule.
The White Hall Volunteer Fire Department has added an aerial fire truck to its vehicle fleet. While it’s an older model retired from service at the Camp Lejeune, N.C., Marine Corps base, it’s still a huge bargain.
A new model costs upwards of $750,000.
The City of White Hall purchased the used model at a cost of $6 – and that’s not a misprint. That’s the type of price one might expect to find only at a – well, fire sale.
The truck, which made its debut at Monday night’s city council meeting, carried a total price of $2,486, including a moving fee of $2,480, Fire Chief Sandy Castleberry said. According to Castleberry, the truck was obtained through the U.S. Forestry Commission as Department of Defense-declared military surplus.
The truck was put through a brief demonstration to Mayor James “Jitters” Morgan, aldermen and other city officials.
Castleberry pointed out that the fire department netted another bargain recently when a federal Department of Homeland Security grant, obtained through the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Services (OES), enabled a purchase of a $34,000 cascade system for only $1,500 in city funds.
The storage tank system is used in refilling fire fighters’ individual air cylinders they employ while entering burning or smoke-filled atmospheres. The system eliminates the need for a compressor.
Castleberry said all area fire departments are invited to utilize the system.
During the council session, aldermen voted unanimously to appoint Allen Cash to the White Hall Museum’s board of directors. Cash is a long-time museum volunteer and has also donated his services to other interests, including OES.
Morgan also discussed the upcoming, month-long Founder’s Day celebration, which kicks off with the annual Trade Day yard-sale marathon on Saturday, Aug. 1. The string of events will conclude with a daylong observance in city park on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Among the chamber of commerce-sponsored activities leading up to the city park celebration will be the Miss White Hall Pageant, 5K run, doggie walk and golf tournament – all of which are detailed on Pages 1 and 6.
Aug. 22 highlights will include a parade, breakfast in the park, car show, entertainment, Guitar Hero contest, ice cream-eating contest and various booths.
Applications for the parade are available at city hall and must be submitted to Maxie’s Barber Shop by Aug. 19. For more information on entertainment, telephone Kim Wood at 870-247-1275 or Billy Coble at 870-489-2923. For additional details on the ice cream-eating contest, telephone Sandy Truman at 870-247-2399.
Booth registration forms are available at city hall and must be completed by Aug. 14.
