Take a load off your feet with a cool one — slush, that is

Mrs. Marty Kline had this habit. Anybody coming to her door on a hot summer afternoon was invited for a “cool one” on her porch. Those expecting a beer or cocktail were disappointed — at first.

Mrs. Marty invented her own Summer Slush, or perfected it from a magazine recipe. Anyway, her filling but cooling  concoction gained her fame in her neighborhood in the 1930s.

This makes ice cream seem so passé. The slush is a bright, deeply satisfying thing. It’s not a drink and it’s not a Popsicle. It defies definition beyond “slush.”

We still have some hot days left. Try this, but be patient. Let it freeze overnight. Then pull up a chair on the porch and ask the next person at your door to sit a spell.

MRS. MARTY’S SUMMER SLUSH

1 can (6 ounces) frozen orange juice, thawed

1 can (13 ounces) crushed pineapple in juice

2 cups watermelon cubes

1/4 cup sugar, optional

1 10 ounce package frozen raspberries (optional)

12 ounces cold ginger ale

Blend ingredients, except ginger ale, to a purée. Add ginger ale and freeze overnight. Thaw to slush in microwave and serve in ice-cream dishes. Serves 8.
