If a need should arise for a golf ball to be caught during this year’s White Hall Founder’s Day Golf Tournament, the Arkansas Razorbacks’ all-time leading receiver, Anthony Lucas, will likely snatch it.
Lucas, a former National Football League performer with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, is scheduled to participate in the tournament, according to tourney spokesperson Richard Wingard.
A Tallulah, La., product, Lucas established a freshman receiving record with the 1995 Razorbacks, catching 27 passes for 526 yards and four touchdowns in helping Arkansas to a Southeast Conference Western Division title. An injury in the 1996 season opener caused Lucas to miss the remainder of the campaign, but he received a medical hardship and remained a sophomore in eligibility for the ’97 season.
He again had 27 receptions, this time for 495 yards and four touchdowns, and followed with 43 yards for a school record 1,004 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior in ’98.
He completed his Razorback career in ’99 with 37 receptions for 833 yards and four touchdowns.
His promise as a professional was short-lived, however, as a series of injuries forced his quick departure from the game.
“We don’t get an athlete the caliber of Anthony Lucas here often,” said Wingard. “It’s great that he’s going to be here with us.”
The tournament is slated for Saturday, Aug. 21. For more information, telephone Wes Booker at 870-692-0265 or Katheryn Funderburg at 870-247-2399.
The golf competition is among several events leading up to the Saturday, Aug. 28, Founder’s Day celebration in city park. A new feature of the celebration will be a “Cookin’ in the Park” contest, which has an Aug. 1 entry deadline. Applications and details may be found on the Web at www.whitehallfoundersday.com.
